Sports Medicine

Sports Medicine in Hoffman Estates, Arlington Heights and Chicago, IL

We know how much your foot health can impact your athletic performance, and it is our priority to help get you off of the sidelines and back in the game. Whether you are dealing with a recurring injury or an accident from the big game, we are here to support you through each step of your therapy. Below is a list of some of the most common sports and sports-related injuries we see in our office:

  • Martial Arts and Kickboxing: Plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, sesamoiditis, and ankle sprains. Proper stretching is vital to injury prevention, specifically, a minimum of 15 minutes before beginning exercise.
  • Aerobics: With 26 bones in the foot and impact forces reaching up to six times the force of gravity, proper shoes are essential when participating in aerobics. Shoes must provide shock absorption and proper cushioning, as well as stability.
  • Team Sports: Baseball, basketball, soccer, football, field hockey, and lacrosse often lead to foot and ankle injuries. Artificial surfaces, improper footwear, and inadequate stretching are recipes for disaster.

Shockwave Therapy in Hoffman Estates, Arlington Heights and Chicago, IL

If you have been suffering from chronic tendon pain that has not responded to other conservative treatments, shockwave therapy may be an option for you. Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is a non-surgical and non-invasive treatment option for treating various musculoskeletal conditions such as subacute and chronic achilles tendinitis and heel pain (plantar fasciitis). A wand is used to deliver small waves of energy focused on the area of pain to help promote healing, increase collagen formation, break down calcifications, disperse substance P (which mediates pain) and improve blood flow to the area to encourage the body to heal itself. The treatment is done in the office, there is generally minimal discomfort and no down time (as is required after surgery). Generally multiple treatments are needed depending on response to the treatments.

The effects of each of the treatments are cumulative and many patients experience some relief as soon as after the first treatment. In the right type of patients, it can help reduce pain significantly, return to work sooner and possibly even avoid the need for surgery. If conservative treatments such as stretching, physical therapy, cortisone injections, orthotics and immobilization have failed to provide relief of pain, ESWT may be considered in conjunction with the other treatments and prior to any surgical treatments.

Regenerative Medicine in Hoffman Estates, Arlington Heights and Chicago, IL

At Midwest Foot & Ankle Clinics, we are proud to offer non-surgical regenerative medicine to our patients. Regenerative medicine includes therapies such as amniotic tissue injections, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Treatment (EPAT). When a foot or ankle injury is keeping you on the sidelines, these non-surgical treatments can help your body help itself, and get you back to enjoying your regular activities quickly.

Regenerative medicine works by replacing or regenerating human cells and tissues to restore them to normal functionality.

Amniotic tissue is the most recent addition to the regenerative medicine arsenal and involves donated amniotic membranes from the umbilical cord or inner layer of the placenta. These tissues undergo an extensive and thorough screening process before being made available for commercial use in injections. Once placed in the body, the cells help to activate your own stem cells to promote quicker healing.

PRP injections are created using stem cells from your own blood. Our team will draw your blood and spin it in a centrifuge to concentrate the stem cells. Once concentrated, it will be injected into the injured area. This boost of stem cells from your own body ensures you can heal faster than ever before.

EPAT is used to help our patients recover from painful muscle, tendon, and ligament injuries. It is especially effective in the treatment of conditions such as plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, sesamoiditis, as well as other chronically injured tissues. For optimal results, we recommend treatment with non-invasive, FDA approved EPAT three to five times per week for 12 weeks. Appointments typically only take 10 minutes, and many patients report feeling immediate relief that continues to improve with continued treatment.
